never go out of style

Style [ˈstī(-ə)l] Noun
1. A distinctive manner of expression

Disclaimer: I am not a fashion blogger or expert. I have never claimed to be.
My sense of style is, admittedly, a mess. I'm the type of person who can fall in love with anything and everything. I like all weird colors and designs. But I have actually never really cared for clothes much.
I have found myself caring more since I've got older. I look at old pictures of myself and am just amazed at how much I have evolved from that little girl in t-shirts and jeans to the teenager who has an obsession with soft pinks and crazy prints. Though I still wear sweatpants and crocs without shame, some things never change.

The way you dress and carry yourself shows people who you are. Just look at the definition of 'style', it's a distinctive manner of expression. But trying to find your sense of style in the wide world of people telling you what is in and fashionable can be a tricky thing.

Style is often an imitation game. When we're young we simply want to imitate the other, cooler kids around us so that we might fit in. And as we grow older we search the racks of thrift stores for the most similar thing we can find to that one outfit we fell in love with on Pinterest. But what we often forget is that we ourselves are each brilliantly different people and that we should show our differences in what we wear.

It might take some people longer to find their niche than others, but in the words of my sister's old assistant soccer coach: "Confidence is key." You might feel uncomfortable jumping out of the box to wear something different, but, trust me, if you are confident in your style and in what you like to wear, nobody will even notice that it's not the same as everyone else's.

Let's be trend setters!

  1. "Confidence is key." really though. you can rock almost anything as long as you know you look great in it. :)

  2. These thoughts are amazing!!

Style is such a hard thing to get right, especially considering the fact that our first thought is to mimic others. But I love that, as we grow older, reading words like these influence us to dress according to our personalities instead.

  3. I don't have much confidence in my own sense of style, so this post was very encouraging! Thanks a lot!

  4. Ah, confidence in our own style! If you say me when I went to school today, I would look different than everyone else: a jean vest with red checker marks near the collarbones with a green tee underneath, some painted flower-styled pants and some brown shoes. I look like someone who rules 90s fashion.. It's weirs, but I love it! And of course, you can never forget that one thing to wear: SMILES! :D

    xoxo Morning

  5. True dat! I believe in expressing myself and feeling happy and confident in my choice of clothing, despite the fact that it rarely fits in with the trend. I always tell my sisters "just work it!", what you wear is your choice. Have fun!

    Great thoughts. I completely agree.

  6. I completely understand your sense of style! I'm aweful at coming up with good outfits, and I rarely take the time, but I love all kind of weird and out of the box (and in the box, if that's a term) things. One thing I've got to disagree on (politely of course) is the idea that people won't notice if you wear something different with confidence. I think that they WILL notice it all the more, but it will be a positive thing and they'll think. "Wow, I love her confident sense of style. I wish I could dress like that.." At least that's what I think when I see someone wearing something I would totally wear, if I were braver. Sorry about that long tangent... Anyhow, thanks for yet an other great post, it inspires me to sort my closet, get rid of all the clothes I don't love, and buy clothes that I do love (second hand stores rule!) and confidently wear them. 1. Thank you for correcting me, that was sort of what I was trying to say, but I can't always word things correctly...
Anyway, thank you for your sweet words, Elizabeth. :)

  7. You are so right! Fashion shouldn't be all about trying to wear what's "in", but more about what we personally feel comfortable in and that we think looks pretty :)

I think that I agree with both you *and* Elizabeth on the issue about that people will or will not notice. I think that they do notice, but that they don't think on it as much as we might think they do. They might have the passing thought, "She has a unique style!" but then not think about it again. I hope I'm making sense?

      Thank you, Hannah!

  8. You are SO RIGHT in that confidence is everything. Wearing crazy color pants or getting different bangs can feel so fun and so scary at the same time. But I know that I'm always so impressed when people wear different things that they obviously love and then wear them without a care in the world. :)

    1. Yes, I know! I am always amazed at people who can be completely confident and comfortable trying new things. It's something I'm still trying to work on myself.

  9. YESSSSSSSS. Hannah, this is absolutely brilliant. I so agree with you.. this has definitely been on my mind lately. Rather than following trends all the time, we can actually be tread-setters. And *that* is awesome. And like you said, always in style. Brilliant, brilliant words, girl

  10. I love what you wrote! Confidence is such a big thing. It's easy to say have confidence but doing is quite a different matter to actually exude it. I love the way you explained this!
