I feel like the world has over-romanticized the age of sixteen. All of the movies, books, and songs out there make it seem as if it were some sacred number.
You'll finally have the freedom of driving.
You'll be super popular, have tons of friends, and go to parties every weekend.
All your insecurities will be cured, and your future will suddenly be crystal clear.
What the world doesn't tell you is that you'll hate parties, and that you'll be terrified of driving. They don't tell you about how confused and alone you will feel. They don't tell you that you'll lock yourself in your room at night so that you can cry for no reason.
Sixteen is not at all easy or glamorous, and most of the time you will wish you could go back to being five years old again...

Goodbye Sixteen

You are so right. When I was little, I thought I would be all grown up by sixteen. I had this idea that I would be drop-dead gorgeous, super fashionable, and probably have a long line of suitors. Heheheh. No.
ReplyDeleteDoes this mean that it's your birthday, or that your birthday is coming up soon? If so, happy birthday, dear :) Seventeen was quite possibly my favorite year so far - hope it's the same for you.
You and me both girl!
DeleteAnd yep, 'twas my birthday! Thank you :)
I have to agree that certain ages are just made fantasized for when we are young, and they are romanticized when we are older. I'm in high school now (I can't reveal my actual age, but at least you know what age range I'm in) and honestly. When I was thirteen, my birthday didn't really feel that special or like so huge landmark... but then, birthday are one of the many things I will not understand much.
ReplyDeletexoxo Morning
Yeah, every year seems the same to me now. The only point to Birthdays is being able to eat cake without feeling guilty. :)
Deletei understand and agree with this post more than you possibly know. sixteen was a huge learning process for me, and it was hard. very hard. but God helped me and worked through it and now i am the better for it. that's not to say i don't have my moments, but i don't struggle quite as much. i'm excited to live life and see what God has in store for me.
ReplyDelete.... i'm also wary of how media portrays life. because yes it's very deceiving.
Sixteen was a very difficult year for me as well, but I'm trying to trust that it was all for the best... I'm still not sure.
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Evelyn :)
Oh my goodness! Your words are perfect!! I agree with everything! But mostly the fact that driving is ridiculously scary! Happy Birthday! (?) Seventeen is pretty cool!
ReplyDeleteYES! Driving is terrible! And thank you :)
Deletei agree! and add on the stress of exams, the age 16 is a mess xxx

Yes it is!
Deleteyou're not alone, girl. When I was sixteen I felt the same way + I was also terrified of driving. I'm 20 now and actually just preparing to get my license. It's definitely not like what the world portrays it to be...the important thing is to just be beautifully, wonderfully *you* at every age, and enjoy each moment of it.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Katie. I'm still learning how to be *me*, but I'm getting better. :)
DeleteDear Hannah,
ReplyDeleteThis is so right on. Society teaches us all stuff that isn't true about who we are, who we're going to be... I think it makes a lot of kids feel this immense pressure about things that we shouldn't feel pressure about. Just like Kate said, it's all about being who you are. The real you is true and that's all that matters. It's funny how so many kids want to hurry up and be an adult, but so many adults want to be kids again. Sometimes I feel old because I want to be a kid again, so I'm glad I'm not alone here. (:
love,
abbie
Thank you so much for your sweet comment, Abbie :)
DeleteAnd, yes, it's true: you either want to be an independent adult, or an innocent, carefree child. There is no contentment in our age.
I've just turned 16 and already it's proving to not be the best number! Just follow, I love the way you write.
