As I'm slowly making my way out of highschool, the subject of my future has been brought up more and more. People have started asking me seriously about what I plan to do once I graduate."Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by,And that has made all the difference." -Robert Frost
Awhile ago I was talking to a friend, and the inevitable question came up. "So, what's your plan after school?"
I have always thought that everyone on the planet has a certain purpose.
Not one person is the same, and I believe that God gives everyone different gifts and talents to aid them in fulfilling their own unique purpose.
That's why I have never liked answering the questions pressed on my by my friends and relatives, even though they mean well. I don't know what my purpose is.
I was about to answer with my usual "I don't know yet," but it didn't come. Instead, this time, I heard myself say: "French. I want to study French."
I didn't know why I said it, it just sort of came spilling out of me... and for some reason, deep down, I knew it was right.
I have been in love with languages for a long time, and decided to learn French for school. My family came to Canada from France hundreds of years ago before making it down to the States, so learning French was more of a fun way for me to learn about my ancestry. Never had I considered it as a possible career or future to pursue.
I thought about it long and hard, and as I've dug further the dots started to connect, and the fog began to clear away.
I am on this path, like the one in the well known poem by Robert Frost, getting closer and closer to where the road will fork into millions of possible futures.
I'm very confused about a lot of things and I'm still trying to make many decisions as I'm preparing for this next stage in life. I know it probably won't be as smooth a path as I hope, but I can feel God's hand directing me, and I have no doubt this is where I'm suppose to go.
That's the best part: I have not one doubt.

Yay! It must be so wonderful to find something you love and decide to do that for the rest of your life. I'm learning French right now, and it's a beautiful language. (-: Are you going to study in France possibly?
ReplyDeleteIt is a gorgeous language.
DeleteOh yes, I would LOVE to study abroad in France someday, but we'll see. :) That wouldn't happen for a couple years, though.
This is such a cool post, Hannah! I have been feeling the same way...although I haven't quite reached the place where you are. I'm still caught in the indecision, torn in a few different directions and hating the question, "so, what do you want to do with your life?" because I JUST DON'T KNOW. :p
ReplyDeleteAlso, I loooove the references to Robert Frost! I love this poem - I named one of my novels "Two Roads" after it...brings back a lot of memories. ♥
A year ago I honestly thought I would always be caught in between directions. But I'm sure you're going to find out what God's plan for you is someday, and then it will all make sense.
DeleteYou're going to do awesome things, girl, I just know it! :)
This is awesome! I'm so glad you've found your purpose and God's will for your life! That's an amazing thing! I love how it just spilled out of you! Have fun!
ReplyDeletehaha thanks. It was pretty cool now that I think back on it :)
DeleteI am so excited for you, Hannah! That is amazing. I also love what you said about purpose, How God has a unique purpose for each one of us. No one can pressure you for it, it will just come as God reveals it to you more and more. Your ancestry sounds so much like my family...! My mom's family is all French, so I know some of the language (still learning it) and grew up with fragments of the culture. (and most importantly the food! Oh my goodness. Haha. So good.)
ReplyDeleteI love the Robert Frost quote. All I can say is, power to you girl. Keep chasing and pursuing what you feel God is leading you to! Grab hold of it and don't let go. You are an adventurer on an adventure. Enjoy it like crazy.
That's so cool! Maybe we're related in some weird, distant way. :)
DeleteThank you for your sweet comment, Katie!
oh and the new blog design....!!! Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteRobert Frost is fantastic!!! <3
ReplyDeleteAnd congrats on finally finding your purpose!! It's a big moment when God opens your eyes to His plan for your life. I know how amazing it felt when He showed me I am supposed to pursue English/Literature... A huge wave of relief & excitement washed over me, and it just 'felt' right.
Have fun seeing where God is leading you!! :D
It is the best feeling ever! English and Literature sound super cool! :)
DeleteThat's just awesome, Hannah. I'm excited to hear about the amazing things God does through you, girl.
ReplyDeleteAlso, your new blog design looks fabulous. (or maybe it's not so new? I've been reading blogs on my phone, so I can't always see the new pretty designs!!)
Thanks, Hannah!
DeleteAnd yes, new design :)
Dear Hannah,
ReplyDeleteThis is perfect. Really, truly. I've always been annoyed by that question, because so many people will be expecting a nice, clean, cookie-cutter response to it. More often than not, it's the wild crazy WHOA answers that will take you far. I love how you interpreted this poem -- it's so true, too. If you know what you want, you'll do anything to get it. Whatever you do in life, make sure you feel truly ALIVE when you do it. And if you don't know exactly what you want, that's the best thing -- you're a wild explorer and you'll know what's real when you see it.
In other non-rambly words, you're going to be awesome at whatever you do. Never lose faith in that, girl. You're spectacular and just being yourself is already fulfilling your purpose. <3
love,
abbie
p.s. I LOVE the new design!! It's so pretty. :D
Thank you so much, Abbie! :)
DeleteGreat thoughts! I am a junior in college, and just now figuring out my major, so you are not alone :)
ReplyDeleteIt is good to know I'm not alone. Finding your life purpose is a crazy stressful thing when you're only a Junior in high school or college :)
DeleteFound your lovely blog through Bloglovin', which feels providential as I just returned from studying abroad in France where I lived for a month in Paris. :) And as someone who has spoken and studied the language, the culture, the country, and the people, I say...yes. Go for this and pursue this dream, this purpose and calling of yours.
ReplyDeleteThere will be days when you curse French verbs, but also days when you can think of nothing but how much you love this melodic, beautiful language. <3
Bon courage,
Grace
