little things | summer 2018

04 September 2018

Summer is usually my least favorite season. It's humid and boring and long. I get too ambitious for everything I want to do during the summer, and as I get nothing accomplished, the time wastes away, and I get discouraged and am ready for school to start up again. However, this summer I have found more of an appreciation for this time of year.

My sophomore year of college was rough, and I have found the time off much needed and refreshing. While the season is still definitely not my favorite, this summer has been somewhat of a turning point in my life. I've really had to get out of my comfort zone and re-evaluate my goals. I might write a blog post all about it at some point once I've organized my thoughts on everything that's going on. It's a lot and it's been challenging, but it's also something that I know I will be thankful for in the future.

But other than all the deep personal reflecting, this summer has been unnaturally busy. Though I'm sure there's more I could've done with my time, I was very active and accomplished a lot.

I started a new job after a frantic 2 months of searching, applying, and interviewing I was able to start a new job. While it's not something I envision myself doing forever, and it stresses me out a lot. I don't like thinking about money a lot, but it is an important tool to be able to do the things that God has called us to do. For that reason I am thankful for my job and my ability to work.

I wrote for a newspaper along with working, I was able to take on an internship with a start up newspaper. I researched for and wrote several articles. Journalistic writing is so much different than any other writing I've done. It's been interesting to learn about the newspaper business, and it's a magical experience to see my words in actual print.

I went to Yellowstone this was an unexpected but amazing trip with lots of hiking and beautiful views. I hadn't ever been out west before so it was fun! I'll hopefully write a travel post all about this soon with pictures.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn - Betty Smith I think I loved this book so much partially because I read it during the summer. Since I didn't have any distractions, I was able to soak it all up and contemplate what it meant to me. This has now become on of my all time favorite books! I just can't rave about it enough! I did a whole reading diary post on my experience reading this book.

Hair moisturizing treatments I found an old bottle of hair moisturizer that had been gathering dust in our cupboard for a long time. I decided to use it on the ends of my hair since I'm trying to grow my hair out more and want the ends to stay as healthy as possible. I noticed an instant difference! My ends are so much softer and stronger! And I'm so into all of the hair moisturizing products and techniques now!

Incredibles 2 About a million people have already raved about this movie. But this highly anticipated sequel was the highlight of the summer, so of course I have to join in the excitement. The first time we tried to see it it was sold out, but once we were finally able to see it I liked it a lot! It's definitely not better than the first, but I think it was a well done and legitimately good sequel that added on a lot to the first one!

The Outsiders - S.E. Hinton I picked this book up as part of my quest to read the books from the Great American Read list and I have not stopped thinking about it. It's short and easy to read, but it's the characters and their relationships that made this book pack such a punch! Highly recommend!

Fiddler on the Roof my sister and I were in the mood for a musical and this one delivered! It's long but super fun and heartwarming at the same time. I've been listening to the soundtrack nonstop ever since.
What have you been doing and what have you been loving over the summer?

  1. I loved Incredibles 2, too! Congrats on starting your sophomore year! That's so exciting. <3 What hair treatment do you use, I might have to look into it?

    1. I'm actually starting my Junior year, but thanks Elle!
I use the Pink brand hair moisturizer. There are also several natural ways you can do hair treatments too, like with coconut oil that you could try too.

  2. you summer sounds like fun! I will have to look up those books, and yes please tell me what hair treatments you use!! I have been trying for a long to time grow my hair out and make it stronger and nothing works:(. Great post

    1. Keeping your hair moisturized is the #1 thing to do if you want your hair to grow strong and healthy. There are several other things you could do to fit with your hair type if you look online. Lots of research and patience will help! Also be sure to keep your hair trimmed. Even if you're growing it out, get it trimmed every 6 weeks or so to keep the ends healthy. It'll actually make your hair grow faster to keep it trimmed!

  3. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is SUCH a good book. So happy you recommended it. I'd love to see photos from your Yellowstone trip!

The thing I most loved about this summer is that I’ve been able to go on little day-adventures – to the lake, the river, or just on a run all by myself. And…I read more books than I thought I’d get to (even with a crazy job).

    hope your week is lovely.

    1. I'm so glad you loved it Keira! The Yellowstone post will hopefully be coming soon.
Small adventures can be the most memorable. Your summer sounds like it was lovely!

  4. Ohhh a Tree Grows in Brooklyn sounds so good!! I’ll have to check it out :) :)

The thing I loved most about this summer was all the coffee & chats with friends I had ;) and also dayyys by the beach were lovely 😊

    1. Yes! You must read it. And I'm so glad someone else understands my love for Fiddler on the Roof.
I didn't get a chance to go to the beach this summer, but it does sound nice!
